Description

A savory and comforting French Onion Chicken Skillet featuring tender chicken breasts cooked with caramelized onions and melted Gruyère cheese, all in one pan for an easy and delicious meal.

Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, about 6 ounces each
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 cup low-sodium beef broth
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
4 slices Gruyère cheese, about 1 ounce each

Instructions

Season both sides of the chicken breasts with salt and black pepper.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the chicken breasts to the skillet and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove chicken from the skillet and set aside.
Reduce heat to medium. Add butter to the same skillet.
Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until deeply caramelized and golden brown.
Add the minced garlic and fresh thyme leaves to the onions and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Pour in the white wine to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the wine is reduced by half.
Add the beef broth and balsamic vinegar to the skillet. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 minutes to reduce slightly.
Return the chicken breasts to the skillet, nestling them into the onion mixture.
Place one slice of Gruyère cheese on top of each chicken breast.
Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from heat and serve the chicken breasts topped with the caramelized onions and melted cheese.
